Something that is not often brought out , is , as much as we all love the earlier Dead , Garcia was still learning the improvisational thing .I.e. his musical vocabulary was limited ( did some awesome things with those limits )!.
One of the thing I love about him was how he always kept trying to grow , to learn . Whatever his limits, ( he was not John Coletrane ) he mostly tried his best to serve the music . His taste and restraint, and the resulting soulfulness, is rare in music , and especially so in the Rock guitar hero world .
I totally agree with your post-retirement analysis . As much as I love this band to the end, the rhythmic messiness, and lack of "swing", is sometime frustrating ... but I still listen to stuff even in that late 92-95 era .
Interesting post .
